This is perhaps one of the most disgusting things I’ve read all year.

The P45 Obit

The lads over at P45 have their own special thoughts on the passing of the Head Crook.

‘We Salute you, Charles J. Haughey - an appreciation of your work for Ireland.’

Read it here.

Song for Ulster

Written very quickly this morning. To be sung in a Damien Dempsey stylee…

I am an angry man yeah, I vent it when I can, yeah
On the DART, with a shopping cart
The negativity, yeah, about the orangemen, yeah
Is a shame, whose to blame?
And when the barrow flies, yeah, into the garda’s lines, yeah
Throw it down, through the main street of town

But it’s all good, it’s all good
Got me some free shoes today
It’s all good, sure it’s all good
Got me some free shoes today

and when the wheelbarrow flies, yeah, it’s a sight for sore eyes , yeah
It is truth, it is youth
They try to keep us down, yeah
The marchers from out of town, yeah
From the North, travelling back and forth
And to survive their marching, yeah
You have to throw everything, yeah
you can grab, like a paving slab

Love Ulster Parade, no way, no way
Love Ulster Parade, no way, no way

Mans face intercepts vice presidental bullet

The latest from the Daily Show:

Jon Stewart, speaking as a “concerned parent,” urged viewers never to let their children go on hunting trips with the vice president. “I can’t emphasize this enough,” Stewart said. “I don’t care what kind of lucrative contracts they’re trying to land, or energy regulation they’re trying to get lifted. . . . He’ll shoot them in the face.”

The 23rd Floor

On one of the main streets in Tallinn sits a rather imposing looking hotel, just outside the gates of the old town and beside the shopping centre. The KGB Hotel The Hotel Viru was build in 1972 and at the time was the highest ’sky scraper’ in the city. Now it has been outstripped with the new construction going on around it. And yet as you walk past it something still calls to you of the old order. In the 70’s the hotel was used to accomodate tourists. In the late 80’s the commies were shoved out of Estonia and the hotel was privatised and bought by the Sokos chain of hotels based in Finland. In 1989, a few months after the hotel had been bought workmen discovered a room on the 23rd floor that was not marked on the hotel blueprint. Upon entering they found it exactly as had been left when the Soviets were booted out. A ‘listening room’ complete with radio equipment, papers, microphones and bugs. The room was a communications base from embassies located in Scandanavia back to Moscow. And now, 16 years later, it’s still there, kept by the hotel as a museum piece, although it’s not open to the general public.
In addition to the secret radio room, the hotel was also bugged and guests who were considered ’suspect’ were accomodated in one of the rooms on the 3rd floor, while the KGB up on the 23rd floor would record everything that happened in those rooms.

Why have I posted about this today?
Because my apartment in Tallinn last week was right next door to the hotel.

A new doctrine on the use of US nuclear weapons has been leaked to the press. Go read blather.net about it, cos daev has spent the last couple of days researching it. (Not to mention he’s a better writer than I.)
